What was mobile gaming like in 2002? The only game I was playing back then was Nokia Snake. Battlesnake is a new take on the classic with a multiplayer last-snake-standing* mode, and the best bit is that you don't control your snake by pressing tiny phone keys but by providing code that plays for you.

This talk covers REST APIs, fun algorithms and new Java features to show how I built an absolutely average Battlesnake that occasionally slithers its way to victory. But it's not about winning, or even about taking part - it's about having a safe space for learning new tech, and we'll also talk about effective learning strategies and how to apply them in and out of work.

* OK snakes don't stand, I know.
